MOVING SUPPLIES

Moving supplies in Charleston, sorted.

Most moving supply lists are written by people who sell moving supplies. This one is written for a local move with rented crates.

Included with every crate package

A Totally Boxless package covers the container side of the move.

  • 15 to 100 reusable plastic moving crates with attached lids, delivered assembled
  • Rolling dollies, at least two with every package above 15 crates, so stacks of crates move without lifting
  • Delivery to your door and pickup from the new address, included in the core Charleston area
  • 10 days of rental time, with five-day extensions from your booking page

Worth buying

A short list, most of it available at any grocery or hardware store in Greater Charleston.

  • Packing paper or a few old towels for dishes and glassware
  • A roll of stretch wrap for drawers and doors that swing open
  • Moving blankets or old comforters for furniture and the TV
  • Zip bags for screws and cables, taped to the piece they came from
  • Thick markers, and painter tape or removable labels for the crate lids
  • A furniture dolly or straps if you are moving heavy pieces yourselves

What you can skip

With crates, most of the cardboard aisle is unnecessary.

  • Cardboard boxes in every size, and the tape gun and tape to build them
  • Box cutters for breaking everything down afterward
  • Wardrobe boxes for a short local move; clothes travel fine folded in crates or on hangers laid flat in the car
  • Bubble wrap in bulk; towels, linens and paper do the same job
  • Dish-pack boxes; plates packed on their edge in a crate with paper between them travel well

Charleston specifics

Heat and humidity shape what to bring. Keep a cooler and water in the truck cab. Load candles, vinyl records, cosmetics and electronics last so they ride in the air conditioning or come off first. Plastic crates keep a sudden afternoon storm off your belongings, which cardboard on a porch cannot do.

Where to get supplies locally

Packing paper, stretch wrap and markers are stocked at the hardware and shipping stores along Highway 17 in Mount Pleasant, Rivers Avenue in North Charleston, Savannah Highway in West Ashley and Main Street in Summerville. For the containers themselves, book a crate package and skip the box run entirely.

Common questions

Do you sell packing supplies?

Not yet. We rent the crates and dollies; paper, wrap and markers are easy to find locally. Tell us if you would use a supplies add-on and we will consider it.

Do I need tape for plastic moving crates?

No. The lids are attached and fold closed. Use removable labels or painter tape for room names so the crates come back clean.

Are dollies included?

Yes. Every package includes rolling dollies sized to the crate count, so stacks roll to the truck instead of being carried.
