A little help choosing

How many crates will you need?

Tell us about the home you’re packing. Include books, kitchenware, clothing, and stored belongings. Furniture travels separately.

Light: mostly essentials and room in the closets. Typical: everyday items and moderately filled closets. Full: packed closets, lots of books or kitchenware, collections, or garage and attic storage.

This is an initial packing guide, not a guarantee. Square footage alone does not measure belongings. Adjust the package for what you actually plan to pack; we’ll refine these recommendations using rental feedback.

Images illustrate relative package sizes. Exact crate and included dolly counts are listed on each card. Approximate home sizes are for a typical amount of belongings. Use the calculator to adjust for your packing needs.

Leaving the Lowcountry?

Moving farther?

Already have a mover in mind? We’re exploring ways to coordinate crate returns with your moving company, so packing with reusable crates could still be part of your move.

Out-of-area rentals and mover partnerships are in planning. A return arrangement and any additional charges must be confirmed before crates leave Greater Charleston.

The move is only half the trip.

You’ll need time to unpack after delivery. Before choosing crates, make a plan for how the empties get back to Charleston.

  1. Know your destination, moving date, and how much unpacking time you need.
  2. Ask your mover whether they can collect the empty crates later and bring them back to Charleston.
  3. Confirm who handles the return, when it happens, and what it costs before booking.

A mover’s return trip does not automatically include crate collection. Moving services are arranged separately from your crate rental.

Why rent moving crates?

Skip the box run.
And the pile afterward.

Cardboard can be cheaper to buy. But there’s also tape to buy, boxes to build, and a pile to break down when you’re done. Renting crates takes those jobs off your list.

A few things to know

Before you pack.

Do you rent reusable moving boxes in Charleston?

Yes. Our crates are reusable moving boxes: sturdy 27-gallon plastic totes with snap-fit lids, delivered to your door across Greater Charleston and collected after you unpack. Some people call them moving crates, bins or totes. Packages start at $59 for 10 crates with 14 days included.

How long can I keep the crates?

Residential packages start with 14 days. You can estimate a longer rental in five-day blocks; extension prices depend on your package.

Do you move my belongings?

You pack and arrange transport or moving labor. Totally Boxless supplies the crates and coordinates crate delivery and empty-crate collection.

Where will you deliver and collect?

We deliver and collect across Greater Charleston: Charleston, Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, Summerville, Goose Creek and the surrounding communities. Checkout checks both ZIP codes as you type, so you know right away whether an address is covered and whether a delivery fee applies.

Can I book a package now?

Yes. Choose your package, delivery and pickup dates and windows, and pay securely online. Your booking is confirmed the moment payment goes through, and you get a private booking page where you can add more days later.

Do you sell moving boxes?

No. We rent reusable plastic moving crates, which for a local move is usually cheaper and easier than buying cardboard boxes. Crates arrive assembled with lids and dollies, and we collect them when you are unpacked.

How much does it cost to rent moving boxes in Charleston?

Packages start at $59 for 10 crates and go up to $309 for 60 crates, each with 14 days included. Delivery and pickup in the core Charleston area are included; outer areas carry a small delivery fee shown before you pay.

How do I keep track of what is in each crate?

Every crate has a QR code on it. Scan it with your phone camera, confirm your booking once, and you can note the room it goes to and what is inside. Your booking page lists every crate with a search box, so finding the coffee mugs at the new place is one tap. Notes are wiped when the crates come back, so nobody else ever sees them.

How much can I put in a crate?

Each crate is a 27-gallon tote, about 1.4 standard moving boxes, so it holds more than you might expect. Keep every crate under 50 pounds, and fill crates only about halfway with books, dishes, tools and other dense items so they stay easy to lift.

Are plastic moving bins better than cardboard?

For a local move, yes: no taping or assembly, stronger stacking, protection from humidity and rain, and nothing to break down afterward. Cardboard still makes sense for shipping or long-term storage.
